MEET HERBIE LUV

DJ HERBIE LUV💙 A.K.A. HERBERT MAYS, founder of DECOMPRESSION SESSION and Baltimore City native, knows all too well the effects of mental illness. He’s battled it his entire life and has realized the importance of admitting something is wrong, seeking education, and getting assistance. During the early days of the COVID-19 Pandemic of 2020 when widespread lockdowns and statewide quarantines were

everywhere, Herb realized that the stress and isolation were triggers for his condition. Consequently, he sprung into action, determining that music could be something that not only entertains but enables listeners and those battling with mental health an opportunity to #decompress. He took this idea to his social media platforms and participants witnessed the birth of his house sessions.

Music Therapy Theory

Music therapy works centrally to calm individuals while helping to boost self-expression. Music psychotherapy can also elicit physiological changes in the human body, such as reduced blood pressure and heart rate. Depending on the directions of the music therapist and the abilities of the individual, there are a few ways music therapy could progress, including:

  • Listening to music

  • Moving or dancing to music

  • Creating music or developing lyrics

  • Singing

Benefits Of Music

Music can have a beneficial effect on brain chemicals such as dopamine, which is linked to feelings of pleasure, and oxytocin, the so-called “love hormone.” And there is moderate evidence that music can help lower levels of the stress hormone cortisol.

Community Music Therapy

We Heal Through:

Community music therapy helps the emotional state of a group of individuals through
coordinated music therapy. To be successful, each individual in the group
has to be interested and participate actively.

Herbie Luv uses powerful music sessions to create a safe space for people who suffer from mental health-related conditions. He believes music can be a component of treatment and ongoing management of a person’s mental health challenges.
